Opening of the academic year with special guest Minister Jan Kees de Jager
On 6 September, the new academic year was formally opened during a ceremony. Minister and alumnus Jan Kees de Jager was guest lecturer during the event. De Jager praised Nyenrode for the inspiration the institute gives to entrepreneurs like himself. Both Deans, Prof. Dr. Leen Paape and Prof Dr. Willem Burggraaf, as well as Rector Magnificus Maurits van Rooijen, delivered speeches. Van Rooijen talked shortly about the strategic plan for Nyenrode’s future. The Chairman of the LXVe Collegie der Heeren Vijf of the Nieuwe Compagnie van Verre, Gerrit Kuiper, gave a speech as well. Willem Burggraaf steps down as Dean Business School
As of this moment, Prof. Dr. Willem Burggraaf stepped down as Dean of the Business School. After five years of managerial tasks, he has decided to return to his position as professor at the Nyenrode Center for Entrepreneurship.Jan-Willem Broekhuysen will succeed him as acting Head of the Business School.

New Business School Amsterdam obtains full accreditation
The New Business School Amsterdam has now obtained full accreditation. The Dutch Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs and Science recently officially recognized the school as an institution of higher education. This privately funded institution for new entrepreneurship was founded in 2006 and this year is educating over 130 students. The New Business School Amsterdam offers a bachelor’s degree program for future new entrepreneurs. In this program they are taught how to become creative and responsible businessmen and women. The program's official language is English, and modules are also offered in Ethiopia, India, China and London. Earlier this year, the institution announced that it would be cooperating with Nyenrode and, starting this academic year, students enrolled at the New Business School can start the master's degree program in New Leadership at Nyenrode immediately after receiving their Bachelor’s degree. http://www.newbusinessschool.nl/

Opening seminar for the Center for Public Auditing & Controlling
On 22 June, the new Center for Public Auditing & Accounting was officially opened with a seminar. The center is a joint initiative of the Nyenrode School of Accountancy & Controlling and the Rijksauditdienst (National Audit Office). Speakers included Saskia Stuiveling (President of the Netherlands’ General Accounting Office), Laura van Geest (Director General of the National Budget Office), Martin Dees (Associate Professor and Academic Director of the Center), and Peter Eimers (Professor of Auditing at the VU and partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers). Dion Kotteman, General Director of the National Audit Office, acted as the host of the event. Read more

GRC360° Executive Forum: Principled Performance
On 4 and 5 October 2010, Nyenrode will be hosting the GRC360° Executive Forum: Principled Performance - A Business Transformation Opportunity. This event has been developed by the global non-profit think tank OCEG, which has authored the GRC Capability Model standards and other tools to help organizations integrate and improve governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) processes. Integrity Day
On 25 November 2010, the Integrity Day event will be held at Nyenrode. This day is being organized by BIOS (the Dutch Ministry of the Interior’s National Office for the Promotion of Ethics and Integrity in the Public Sector), in cooperation with Nyenrode’s European Institute for Business Ethics (EIBE). The central theme of this event is: ‘Integrity: from Understanding to Perception’ and well-known speakers will provide their vision on the perception of integrity. A variety of interactive workshops will also be held and the ‘2011 Integrity Yearbook’ will be presented to all participants. Pioneer of business ethics Henk van Luijk honored with lecture
Prof. Henk van Luijk died on 19 January 2010. He was one of the pioneers of business ethics in Europe and in 1994 laid the foundations for Nyenrode's European Institute for Business Ethics, where he was the academic director until 2000. In his honor, and starting this year, Nyenrode and MVO Nederland will be organizing annual Henk van Luijk lectures. The first lecture was held on 30 June this year and was delivered by visiting professor Joanne Ciulla. Read the text of the lecture

RTL Masterclass on Brand Management in Fashion
The Nyenrode & RTL Masterclass on Brand Development in Fashion was held on 1 July 2010. Speakers at this event included Prof. Dr. Kitty Koelemeijer (Professor of Marketing at Nyenrode), Aad Boon (CMO of WE Europe), Roland Kahn (CEO of Cool Cat) and Robert Polet (CEO of Gucci Group). The Masterclass was led by Peter van Zadelhoff of the RTL Z television network, and was organized in cooperation with the Nyenrode Marketing Society (NyMaS).

President Nyenrode Foundation Overmars also appointed to Supervisory Board SNS Reaal
Piero Overmars has been nominated as a member of the Supervisory Board for SNS Reaal. This appointment will have no impact on his duties as President of the Nyenrode Foundation.

Public Sector MBA goes modular starting in 2011
The Public Sector MBA is celebrating its 10th birthday! And in order to be able to offer the same high level of quality for the next ten years, the decision was made to offer the Public Sector MBA in modular form starting in 2011. This new format is perfect for people with busy professional and personal lives. Thanks to the flexible structure, participants will be able to set the pace of their studies. For example, they will be able to take a temporary break between modules, or even speed up their progress by enrolling in several modules at the same time. In addition, they will be free to determine the sequence in which they participate in the modules. The modules are also perfect for participation as single classes, to gain more in-depth knowledge in a specific area, for example. Kasteeldagen (“Castle Days”)
This year, Nyenrode is introducing an event known as the Kasteeldagen. During these special days participants can participate in classes on financial subjects and widen their focus towards subjects such as business economics or business administration. The first Castle Day will be held on 15 September and the theme is ‘Trends in Business Information Systems’. New Board Program Executive Session on the role of the Chairman
An Executive Session of the New Board Program was held on 21 June, the theme of which was ‘The Chairman makes or breaks the board’. During this session extensive discussions were held on the position of the Supervisory Board vis-à-vis company management and the special role the chairman plays within this context. Speakers included former Unilever chairman Dr. Anthony Burgmans and Prof. Steven Schuit, LLM, who recently published a book on this theme. Nyenrode alumnus wins second prize in Master Thesis Award
Joes van 't Leven won second place in the Ernst & Young’s Master Thesis Award contest with his thesis on the influence of culture on the behavior of accountants. The first prize was won by Henk-Jan Nanninga. Further information

Zlata Brouwer finalist for Student Ondernemer 2010 prize
Violist-entrepreneur Zlata Brouwer, alumna of the Master of Science in Controlling program at Nyenrode, is one of five finalists competing for the Student Ondernemer (‘Student Entrepreneur’) 2010 award. Her company, Zlata Strijkinstrumenten, rents and sells stringed instruments and related accessories.

Désirée van Gorp Professor of International Business Strategy
As of September 1st, Dr. Désirée van Gorp, Director of the International Business & Diplomacy Department and of the International MBA program, is appointed Professor of International Business Strategy. She joined Nyenrode in 1999 and obtained her PhD in 2008 with her dissertation entitled: "Offshoring in the service sector: an empirical investigation on the offshoring behavior of service firms and its influence on their foreign entry mode choice”. Willem van Rhenen, Professor of Engagement and Productivity
At present, the focus on reducing work-related stress is experiencing a shift, moving towards preventive personnel policy. The assumption here is that raising the level of engagement among employees will lead to a lasting increase in the productivity of energetic personnel. As a new professor at Nyenrode, Willem van Rhenen, Chief Medical Officer for ArboNed, will focus on these issues. Sponsored by ArboNed, his chair is entitled Engagement and Productivity. In cooperation with the University of Utrecht and the University of Amsterdam, Van Rhenen has conducted scientific research into the prevention of employee absences resulting from psychological symptoms. He received his doctoral degree in the topic ‘From stress to engagement’. The photo shows the signing of the agreement between Nyenrode and ArboNed. Edgar Karssing, co-author of book on virtue ethics and integrity
Together with Marcel Becker, Paul van Tongeren, Alain Hoekstra and Ron Niessen, Dr. Edgar Karssing of Nyenrode’s European Institute for Business Ethics (EIBE) has collaborated on the book “Deugdethiek en integriteit (‘Virtue Ethics and Integrity’)”. In his contribution to the publication, he discussed the relationship between virtue ethics and integrity in an official context. See profile Edgar Karssing

Membership VCV now open to all alumni
From now on, the membership of alumni community VCV is open to all Nyenrode alumni, Rector Magnificus Prof. Dr. Maurits van Rooijen told the audience during the opening of the Academic Year. Until now, the membership was only open to alumni of open degree programs and open executive programs of the Business School. As of this moment, alumni of the School of Accountancy & Controlling can join as well. They will receive more detailed information in the near future

Deo van Wijk donates 1 million Euros to Nyenrode Fund Foundation
The Nyenrode Fund Foundation has received a donation of 1 million Euros from alumnus Deo van Wijk. Nyenrode and the Nyenrode Fund Foundation are extremely grateful to Mr. Van Wijk for this unprecedented and very generous donation. The gift was announced on Tuesday 17 August 17 during the scholarship ceremony at the MSc19 Basecamp in the woods of Austerlitz. See also: http://www.stichtingnijenrodefonds.nl/

Scholarships
During the same ceremony, representatives of alumni from the years 1956-58 and 1957-59 each awarded a scholarship loan to winners chosen by their graduating class. The interest-free amount of € 10,000 must be repaid by the student recipient within five years, after which time the funds will once again be available to be granted as a loan. New graduating classes have already registered to participate in this revolving scholarship initiative of the Nyenrode Fund Foundation. Various scholarships worth € 10,000 were also awarded, financed by the Fund itself. Former President Henjo Hielkema also awarded two scholarships, one on his own behalf, and a second on behalf of himself and his fellow classmate Van Hedel. Photography students from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie on campus
Nyenrode has asked seven photography students from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam to, under the supervision of their instructor, shoot inspirational, creative photos that capture the ‘Spirit of Enterprise” concept. The Rietveld Academie is a prominent College for the Plastic Arts and Design. Several of these photos will be selected for communications purposes.

Focus Masterclass: Marshall Goldsmith
