Alliance between New Business School, Amsterdam, and Nyenrode
The New Business School, Amsterdam, and Nyenrode Business Universiteit are to cooperate intensively in order to facilitate the onward flow from New Entrepreneurship to New Leadership. Their shared vision of, among other things, entrepreneurship, innovation and responsible business ensures that the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses of both institutions are closely matched. This means that students, for the first time since the 1990s, can follow a fully integrated Bachelor-Master program in the private sector. You can read more (in Dutch) here.
Monitor Survey: Entrepreneurs and Managers Opposed to Excessive Cuts
Dutch entrepreneurs and managers are opposed to excessively severe cuts in spending if these endanger the budding economic recovery. Seminar: ‘Taking Offshoring To the Max’
On 10 May, in cooperation with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the World Bank, Tata Consultancy Services and Allen & Overy, the seminar “Taking Offshoring To the Max” was held at Nyenrode. During this seminar, which was also attended by outgoing Minister Maria van der Hoeven, Dr. Désirée van Gorp disclosed the results of her recent research on offshoring. The seminar was also addressed by various experts from the private sector. At the end of the day, the Global Sourcing & Innovation Award was presented to Sergey Lugonov, a student at the Manchester Business School, for his essay on ‘Building the company of the future’.
Nyenrode provides Input for Election Debate on RTL
The academic staff of Nyenrode have supplied input for last week’s RTL election debate by highlighting the need to stimulate individual entrepreneurs and the small and medium-size business sector. Nyenrode asserts that the small and medium-size business sector, especially individual entrepreneurs, must be give the opportunity to market their ideas. After all, they provide the most employment. The party leaders must also display more visionary leadership, says Nyenrode, when it comes to the future of the Netherlands. Read the press release (in Dutch).
De Groene Zaak Election Debate
On 26 May, in partnership with IUCN, Nyenrode Business Universiteit, Urgenda and MVO Nederland, De Groene Zaak organized an election debate in The Hague. De Groene Zaak represents businesses in the Netherlands that are run on the principle of sustainability. Two members of the House of Representatives debated with representatives from the private sector. Nyenrode’s Rector Magnificus, Dr. Maurits van Rooijen, took part in the debate on behalf of the private sector. Prof. Jacques Reijniers, an expert in the field of procurement policy, was on the panel.

‘Dutch Quiz’ to familiarize Russians with Dutch Culture
On behalf of NL EVD Internationaal, a department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Nyenrode’s International Department is to provide the ‘President’s Program’, a training program specially intended for Russian middle-echelon managers. The Dutch Quiz is part of the first module of this program. One of the purposes of this module is to improve the Russian participants’ familiarity with Dutch culture. To this end, a Dutch Quiz with four rounds was specially developed. The quiz was tested on Thursday, 20 May with twelve international members of the Nyenrode staff.

A Good Temporary Boss
New Program: Public Auditing & Accounting
Starting on 22 June, Nyenrode is going to provide a variety of programs for the auditor in the public sector. Among other things, these relate to the modular Public Auditing & Accounting course and carrying out research and organizing various events in this connection. At present, Nyenrode is the only university in the Netherlands that offers courses on auditing and accounting specifically oriented towards auditors working in the public sector. The expertise center that will provide the program is an initiative of the Nyenrode School of Accountancy & Controlling and the Government Audit Department. Nyenrode offers Summer Courses with Utrecht Summer School
For the first time, Nyenrode is offering summer courses within the context of the Utrecht Summer School. Five one-week courses are offered, focusing on international aspects of doing business. The Nyenrode programs are Successful Business Start-ups, Business Ethics and Sustainability, Global Sourcing & Offshoring, Financial Management for Non-Financials and Doing Business in China & India. Nyenrode School of Accountancy & Controlling Open Day on Saturday 5 June
On Saturday, 5 June, Nyenrode is organizing an open day for all Accountancy & Controlling courses. 2nd Place NBN-Rabobank Thesis Prize Competition for Luc Meire
On 28 April 2010, former Public Sector MBA student Luc Meire (who graduated last year) achieved second place in the NBN-Rabobank thesis prize competition. (NBN: Netwerk Bedrijfsethiek Nederland, or Dutch Business Ethics Network.) The subject of his Master’s thesis was “Trainee police officers and integrity: a study of the effectiveness of the KLPD integrity policy in relation to trainees”. Kees de Kluyver Dean of Lundquist College of Business at University of Oregon

Danielle Zandee elected on the ODC Executive Board of the Academy of Management
Dr. Danielle Zandee won the election to become the 2-year Representative-at-Large position on the ODC (Organizational Development & Change Division) Executive Board of the Academy of Management. The Academy of Management (founded in 1936) is the largest scholarly management association in the world. The ODC Division has over 2700 members (both faculty and practitioners) from around the world. Ger Zwartendijk assists University of Novi Sad in setting up Entrepreneurship Course
In April, Ger Zwartendijk delivered a workshop at the University of Novi Sad on setting up a course on entrepreneurship. He was also previously involved in the formation of the Master’s degree course at that university.
Doctoral Candidates Peter Epe, Marta Berent-Braun, Lineke Sneller and Lex van Teeffelen
Peter Epe RA hopes to obtain his doctorate on 14 June. The title of his thesis is 'Winstbelasting in de bedrijfseconomische jaarrekening' (‘Tax on profit in annual business accounts’). Marta Berent-Braun MSc will defend her thesis ‘Does ownership matter? Ownership dynamics, ownership social capital and responsible ownership in private firms’. On the same day, Lineke Sneller RC hopes to achieve her doctorate. The title of her thesis is 'Does ERP Add Company Value? A Study for the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.' Lex van Teeffelen MSc hopes to get his doctorate on 29 July. His dissertation has the title ‘Exploring Success and Failure in Small Firm Business Transfers’. Management Information in the Healthcare Sector: Straitjacket or Compass?
In healthcare institutions, a great deal of information is recorded and reported. This is partly due to the need to comply with legislation, but also based on the desire to manage matters. Information is knowledge, it is said, but what use is all that information? Is the right kind of information available? Are too many reports being made? Due to increasing competition in the healthcare sector, management information will become ever more important for healthcare institutions. Many supervisory directors still have to get used to the idea that their role is becoming increasingly important. In most stock market listed companies in the Netherlands, the performance of the boards of supervisory directors is below par. In his new book, ‘The Chairman Makes or Breaks the Board’, Prof. Steven Schuit asserts that it is mainly down to the chairman of the board to ensure that this situation improves. The book gives detailed consideration to the question of why most boards of supervisory directors do not perform better despite having numerous talented people on them.

For many investors, the recent credit crisis came as a complete surprise. In their new book, ‘Eigen schuld: Beleggingslessen uit de crisis’ (‘Own Fault: Investment Lessons from the Crisis’), Arie Buijs and Dirk Gerritsen consider whether these investors actually helped to bring about this difficult situation. In their book, the authors argue for a new sobriety in investment. It will be published in early June.
