Entrepreneurs and managers: ‘Credit crisis is the result of soulless actions’
Half of managers and entrepreneurs surveyed in the Netherlands believe that the credit crisis has been caused by soulless actions on the part of business, while half of companies and managers surveyed believe that bonuses undermine a feeling of community within the organization. These conclusions emerged from the Nyenrode Monitor, a regular study conducted by Nyenrode Business Universiteit. The theme of the study was business spirituality. IMBA students receive Harvard award for MoC-project
For the second year in a row, a group of Nyenrode IMBA students have been awarded by Harvard Business School for their project on the Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MoC) course, which was taught by the Nyenrode Strategy Center. Students Hanako Masudo, Caroline Saweho, Avik Sengupta, Michael Larkum, and Radek Ruhlmann wrote a paper on the petrochemical cluster ‘Port of Rotterdam’. The MoC course, which was developed at Harvard Business School by Professor Michael Porter and colleagues, was held at Nyenrode in March and April 2009. Read more here.

Trust has added value on the accountancy market
Regardless of whether it is a Big4 or Non-Big4 firm, when an accountancy firm invests in a good relationship based on trust with its clients in the Dutch SME sector, it will be able to improve its competitive position substantially. This was the conclusion Miranda Stolk and Paula Liesker, Accountancy Program students, reached in their premium master’s theses. For more information, visit the website.

14th Family Business Day
On 29 January 2010, Nyenrode, ABN AMRO and Berk Accountants en Belastingadviseurs will be organizing the 14th ‘Family Business Day’. This year’s theme is ‘The success of the family business’. During the day the new book by Roberto Flören and Stefan Jansen (De stille kracht van het familiebedrijf) will be presented. Several entrepreneurs who run family businesses will give lectures. The day will be closed by Gerrit Zalm who will share his thoughts about family businesses. The event is specifically organized for entrepreneurs and company families who are involved in family businesses, not for advisors. International support for Nyenrode research proposal on auditing standards
The research board of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) decided recently to provide Nyenrode with an important research grant to be spent on auditing research. The research project is dedicated to the current application of international auditing standards, with a focus on the application of auditing standards by small- and medium-sized audit firms. The researchers involved in the project are visiting professor Arnold Wright, university associate professors Niels van Nieuw-Amerongen and Joost van Buuren, and Christopher Koch (Mannheim University, Germany). Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Society Day
The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Society Day was held at Nyenrode on 24 November 2009. The day began with forty entrepreneurs listening to a presentation by visiting professor John Psarouthakis, founder of JP Industries, a Fortune-500 company that has acquired underperforming companies and turned them around. He gave a brief description of how he built up his company to become a business with sales of $600 million. The afternoon was reserved for the discussion of cases submitted by participants. Topics included the role social media can play in B-to-B activities; the sense and nonsense of sustainability; and how to deal with Generation Y. The next Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Society Day will be held on 14 April 2010.

Nyenrode number 1 in Emerce-100 study
In the 2010 edition of the annual Emerce-100 image study, Nyenrode was the winner in the Education & Training category. The scores in the Emerce-100 study are determined on the basis of experiences of respondents familiar with the companies, or the image that they have of these companies. Over 2300 respondents with a position in marketing, ICT or general business participated in the study.

Financial Affairs employee Koos Plugge (57) dies
It was with great sadness that Nyenrode received the news of the unexpected death of colleague Koos Plugge (57) on 12 December. Koos was employed at the Financial Affairs department. Nyenrode has lost a dedicated colleague and a unique person.

MBA Module Sustainability and Innovation

Nyenrode Launches YouTube Scholarships
Nyenrode Business Universiteit has become the first business school to use the video hosting site YouTube as a means to identify potential scholarship winners. This year Nyenrode awarded its first batch of ‘You Tube scholarships’ to students on the basis of a 2 minute video explaining why Nyenrode is the best business school for them to obtain their MSc in Management degree. Ethics and Integrity Officer Program starts
The four-day Ethics and Integrity Officer (VPI) training course will start on 1 February 2010. This training program has been developed by Nyenrode in cooperation with BIOS (the Dutch Ministry of the Interior’s National Office for the Promotion of Ethics and Integrity in the Public Sector). The Ethics and Integrity Officer is usually the first person to contact in the event of integrity questions or violations. The training course is designed to prepare officers in this relatively new position so that they are able to do their jobs well. For more information, visit the website.

Annual report 2008-2009, 'From NIVRA-Nyenrode to the Nyenrode School of Accountancy & Controlling’
On 17 December 2009, the Nyenrode School of Accountancy & Controlling published its annual report for 2008-2009. During the academic year 2008-2009, preparations were made for the integration within Nyenrode and the name change from NIVRA-Nyenrode to the Nyenrode School of Accountancy & Controlling. In addition to the Business School, the Nyenrode School of Accountancy & Controlling became the second faculty at the university. For more, visit the website.

Gert van Dijk Chairman of Evaluation Committee Q fever
Prof. Dr. Gert van Dijk, Professor of Cooperative and Business Administration and Management, is appointed chairman of the committee that will examine how the ministries of Health and Agriculture addressed and fought the Q fever, and what lessons can be drawn from that. The committee report will be offered to the House of Representatives before the summer recess.

Bob Hoogenboom speech at the Vrije Universiteit
On 3 December 2009, Prof. Bob Hoogenboom accepted the title of special associate professor of Police Studies and Safety Issues at the Vrije Universiteit. His acceptance speech was entitled 'Bringing the police back in; Notes on the lost & found character of the police in police studies'. Hoogenboom is an associate professor of Forensic Business Studies at Nyenrode.

Bob Hoogenboom Visiting Fellow at London School of Economics
Prof. Bob Hoogenboom has also been appointed visiting fellow at the Mannheim Centre for Criminology of the London School of Economics. At the LSE, Bob Hoogenboom will provide education on topics such as fraud, money laundering, and the quality of supervision. Together with Prof. Marcel Pheijffer, he recently published ‘Financiële decadentie, toezicht en compliance (Financial decadence, supervision and compliance)’.

First class completes Vitae Talent Lab
The Vitae Talent Lab's first class of participants completed the program on 8 December 2009. In the Talent Lab, professionals are monitored for at least 3 months during their work and learning process, involving experiments with interventions in their talent development process. The goal of the Talent Lab is to optimize what talent can yield for professionals at their workplace by providing them with guidance based on the two pillars of on-the-job learning and performance. These pillars are the individual’s talent profile, and the organizational environment’s development strength. Mn Services and Europe China Institute start China Structural Development Monitor
Pension fund broker and asset management firm Mn Services and Nyenrode’s Europe China Institute have started a recurring panel study in China, the China Structural Development Monitor (CSDM). In this qualitative study, the Chinese socio-political and economic development and the medium-term investment climate in China will be mapped out. A regular panel will form the basis of the study, and will be composed of members of the rapidly growing middle class in China. This group will be monitored on a continuous basis using questionnaires and interviews. The panel’s opinions will be converted to what is known as the CSDM index, which will help describe the medium term development in China. For more, visit: www.nyenrode.nl/eci

Publication ‘Good News from the Netherlands – 50 inspirational innovations’
The book Goed Nieuws Uit Nederland – 50 inspirerende innovaties (Good News from the Netherlands – 50 inspirational innovations) contains 50 success stories about innovations. Examples include tropical shrimp bred on the residual heat from power stations, and an oversized stapler used by steel workers. Rob de Graaf, part-time lecturer at Nyenrode, Elke den Ouden of the Technical University in Eindhoven, and Philips were responsible for editing the book.

Sustainability is the theme of the third ‘Beursvloer Breukelen’
On 25 March 2010, the third edition of a beursvloer (stock exchange floor) for corporate social responsibility will be held in Breukelen. The location is once again the Koetshuis (Coach House) at Nyenrode Castle. Any social organization, institution and business from the municipality may participate in this event. The theme of this edition of the beursvloer is sustainability, the theme for the municipality of Breukelen in 2010. For more, visit the website.

Leek & Van der Hoeven Training en Coaching in Business Accelerator
The Nyenrode Business Accelerator recently added a company to its membership, which speeds up change and development in organizations: Leek & Van der Hoeven Training en Coaching. Alumni René Leek and Ben van der Hoeven provide support to a company’s management by setting up and designing change processes, assisting boards of directors and management teams in working according to new thinking and working methods, and coaching individual managers and key employees in processes involving their personal change and development. First networking event for Nyenrode Business Accelerator and UtrechtInc
On 25 November 2009, Nyenrode Business Accelerator (NBA) and UtrechtInc (the Utrecht Incubator) held their first joint networking social event. The goal is to promote increased partnerships among the participating companies. The NBA company Pursel gave a presentation on financing start-ups, while the NBA training firm Leek en Van der Hoeven held a speed-dating event.

Maryleen Schiltkamp Exhibition in Dr. Albert Heijn Building
